A year 2020 brought us so many surprises. Working from home, closed gyms did not help us avoiding back problems.
You think you are alone in this struggle? Well... over 85% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, and Americans spend tens of billion dollars each year trying to get rid of it. Just this year, 3-4% of the entire US population will be temporarily disabled due to lower back pain.
What’s causing all of this pain in the back?
Most of people would think that the pain is caused by a structural problem in the back itself: spinal abnormalities, disc degeneration, herniated discs, and other forms of 'physical proof’ of pain. From what we’ve been taught to believe about pain, this makes sense. However, the research and science behind pain suggests the opposite . In summary, it suggests that:
- There is no reliable correlation between physical abnormalities in the spine (like slipped/ herniated discs) and levels of physical pain.
- Over time, most herniated discs spontaneously de-herniate on their own, without medical intervention.
- Pain relief outcomes from physical interventions like back surgery are not significantly different from pain relief outcomes of more conservative approaches and placebo effects
- Our attitudes, feelings, and beliefs about back pain have a measurable impact on the level of physical pain we feel.
- Mindbody treatments (designed to change these attitudes, feeling, and beliefs about pain) can measurably reduce back pain over time.
